Happenings in our Hamlet, September-October 2019

Some great activities are coming up in Caer Gwyn and around the region. Be sure not to miss a thing!

Sewing Nights. Tuesdays, September 17, October 1, 15, 29, 7-9pm, Illini Union Rm 405.

Coronation of Seto and Ynes. Saturday, September 28. Every 6 months a new King and Queen step up to the thrones of the SCA’s Middle Kingdom, with much pagentry, panoply, and pompousness. Let us welcome our new monarchs! Sponsored by the Barony of Illiton. Pekin, Illinois. More info.

Archery Practices. Sundays, Sept 22, Oct 6 & 20, 3-5pm, U of I Stock Pavilion. (For additional dates, see our Facebook group. )

Rapier Practices. Weekly on Sundays, 3-5 pm, U of I Stock Pavilion (no practices during UofI holiday breaks)

Arts and Sciences nights. Fridays, Sept 20, Oct 4, 18, 25, 7-9 pm, Illini Union Rm 210.

Middle Kingdom Academy of Defense: Classes on all aspects of rapier combat. Saturday, October 5. For more details, click the “MKAoD” tab above.

Monthly Business meeting: Sunday, October 6, 5-6pm, U of I Stock Pavilion. (frequently followed by dinner at a local restaurant afterwards)

Tuesday August 19: Sewing night at the Makerspace, 6pm, Independent Media Center, Urbana, Illinois.

Saturday, August 24: Baroness Duchess Wars, Annual camping event with all the trimmings – combat, rapier, archery, merchants, royal court, classes, arts competitions. Christian County Fairgrounds, Taylorville, Illinois. Sponsored by the Shire of Swordcliff.

Upcoming Activities: CU Pride Parade

Saturday, September 15 | 4:30pm
Show your support for the “Middle Ages as they should have been” by marching with Caer Gwyn in the Champaign-Urbana Pride Parade! Garb, banners, rainbows all encouraged! This is a place to look fabulous, preferably in your attempt at period clothing, but also wear comfortable shoes. The parade is about a mile long and we will be standing around for a while before it starts. Lineup will be at 4:30 on Washington St. between Walnut and Freemont (near the Children’s Museum); look for group #54. Parade officially starts at 5pm.

Upcoming Activities: April 23-29

Monday April 23: 7 – 9 PM, Music Night at the Illini Union 
Illini Union, Fourth Floor, probably room 404
This is a month for musicians! Bring any instrument or medieval/renaissance sheet music you have. We will take inventory of the interests within our group and maybe have a little jam/singalong session. If there is enough demand, we may be able to pull together a Music Guild.
Everyone else is invited to bring a project or just hang out and enjoy any music that happens.

Saturday April 28: Awakenings in Bloomington
Where else can you go on an Armored Easter Egg Hunt, or watch a pink bunny in plate mail be devoured by a Tyrannosaurus Rex? (Photographic evidence provided!)
The schedule includes  Egg hunts for Armored & Rapier combatants, Tournament of the Courtier,  Contest for “Best Carnival Mask,” A&S Artisan’s Row, Archery & Thrown Weapons (weather permitting), Classes, and Bardic activities.

Sunday April 29: Rapier Practice
Stock Pavilion
This is our weekly rapier fight practice – every Sunday at this time and location. This is open to people of any skill or athleticism level. An instructor will be on hand teaching an intro/beginner course followed with one-on-one instruction, as well as loaner swords and protective equipment.
There will be instructional drills as well as free sparring – so you’ll learn how to swing a sword, then get a chance to do it! Males should wear an athletic cup, and both genders should wear sufficient clothing to leave no bare skin below the waist (long pants, tall socks, closed toe shoes). If you have any questions about attending, or are intending to bring someone under the age of 18 to learn, please contact Ursus at r.andrew.marks@gmail.com.

It’s open season at Sewing Night this month. With Pennsic and lots of conventions coming up over the summer, here’s a chance to get your garb and/or cosplay on!

Monday March 12: 6 – 9 PM, Art at the Makerspace – Gouache and Shell Gold
Makerspace Urbana, 202 S Broadway Ave, IMC Basement Room #16, Urbana, IL 61801, USA
 

(Third time’s the charm? I have all the supplies, I have a location, and some folks who couldn’t make the previous runs can make it this week, knock on wood!)

Making your own gouache is quick and easy! Starting with finely ground earth pigments and gum arabic, you can make your own opaque but water-activated pots of gouache and shell gold for artistic works. Some kits will be available for purchase.
Age 13+. Free to make one color and one gold; $1 for additional colors/additional golds; $5 for a starter kit with some tools and materials to take home.
Saturday March 17th: Scribin’ and Imbibin’: A Monk’s Life
The fourth annual scribal arts and brewing event, Scribin’ and Imbibin’ is a fun event with several Caer Gwyntians making the trip and classes taught by Oswyn (cordials, vinegars, and mustards), Hrefna (Icelandic runes), and Lynette (tea and conversation). If you’d like a ride, check the Rideshare Board on the wiki and/or Facebook threads.
