Monody and the First Opera

Late in the 16th century, a musical genre developed in Italy. “Monody” represented a radically new way of thinking about music and led to the creation of the style we now call Baroque. Its roots were in the writings of the Florentine Camerata, an elite group of musicians and intellectuals who scrutinized the music of ancient Greece in an attempt to rediscover its mysterious power to move the emotions. Convinced that the musical potency of the Greeks reached its zenith in sung tragedies, they conceived a modern recreation: opera. Come learn about the characteristics and philosophy of early opera!

Using the International Phonetic Alphabet

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a tool used by linguists to communicate the pronunciation of words with precision. IPA makes it easier to quickly learn the correct pronunciation of texts in modern and historical languages, and to teach that pronunciation to others with minimal ambiguity. This class will introduce you to the IPA’s list of symbols and teach you how to figure out what each one means. We will also practice writing the symbols, reading them aloud, and using them to identify whether what we hear is the same as what we see written.

They Can’t All Be Hamlet: All’s Well That Ends Well

Some of Shakespeare’s plays have lasted through the centuries as cultural icons, and then, there are some of his other plays. For anyone who’s been curious about some of Shakespeare’s less-familiar works, let this class introduce you to one of them. All’s Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare’s later comedies, rather Machiavellian, and could also be considered “The Maury Play.” It has a few disturbing elements that make it a problem play for 21st-century audiences (trigger warning: issues related to consent and rape). Attendees are welcome to read the play in advance of class.
